Painting Miniatures Figures Made Quick And Easy
Painting Industrial Black and Yellow Stripes
I haven't done a ton of striping in yellow and black, but I recently made an objective marker with striping on the outside and found a method and combination of colors that was very fast and resulted in a nice crisp set of stripes.
First, basecoat the areas to be striped in black. I was working off of black primer, but you could also basecoat it using any black. Then, I used some modeling tape I got from the local RC store to mask off the areas that were going to be painted with the yellow stripes. The brand I used is called Fastape, in the 6mm size, by Parma International (www.parmapse.com). It also comes in a 10mm, 18mm, and I believe a 4mm size.
Paint one coat of Dheneb Stone (Foundation) followed by a coat of Citadel Golden Yellow over the unmasked areas. The Foundation paint puts down a nice opaque layer and is neutral enough for the yellow to show nicely.
Pull the tape off gently. The tape should come off cleanly. The Fastape is designed to be low tack, just like the blue tape you for household painting projects to mask off areas you don't want to paint. I was really happy with the result. I expected at least a little bit of the black primer to come off, but none did and the edges were very crisp.
Lastly, edge the yellow areas with a little bit of Citadel Skull White and the black areas with some VMC Basalt Grey. That's it.
Naturally, if you can't tape your area, use a fine pencil to draw your lines and then use the same process.
