Painting a Imperial Guard Sentinel for Warhammer 40K

Another new kit from Games Workshop that I really wanted to try out given all of the different configuration options ... sense a pattern here? The first step was magnetizing the model. You can find the article at: Magnetizing Your Imperial Guard Sentinel

Step-by-Step

  1. Clean and assemble the model as desired. The only thing I really left unglued were the legs and the main cabin to make sure I could get at everything. To protect the glue spot, just put a small dab of white glue over the waist ball joint and the corresponding socket on the underside of the cabin.
  2. Prime Rustoleum Camo Green
  3. Paint the metallic pieces (pistons, ball joint, etc) VMC Gunmetal.
  4. Paint the hoses and cables as desired. I used Mechrite Red (Foundation), Ultramarine Blue, and Dheneb Stone (Foundation). Dheneb Stone makes a good base color for yellow.
  5. Paint your windows and lenses Ultramarine Blue
  6. Use a flat #2 brush and some Dhebeb Stone to paint the aquilas and skulls. I used the same color to paint the dial faces on the plasma gun
  7. Basecoat the cockpit seat with Snakebite Leather and paint the various buttons and knobs as you see fit.
  8. Wash the entire model with Paynes Grey.
  9. Basecoat the brass portions with VMC Brassy Brass
  10. Wash the brass portions with Devlan Mud (Wash)
  11. Use a flat #2 brush and some VMC Russian Uniform WWII to line the hard edges.
  12. For highlights, I used Skull White over Dheneb Stone, Blood Red over Mechrite Red, and Lightning Blue over Ultramarine Blue.
  13. Weather as needed. I just did a couple of metallic patches on the corners and some of the hard edges using VMC Gunmetal. I also mixed a little bit of Baal Red (Wash) and Leviathan Purple (Wash) to tint the ends of the leg pistons.
  14. Use a fine brush to basecoat the searchlight lens Dheneb Stone and then yellow. Use some VMC American Dark Green to touch up the grill lines.
  15. Base
  16. Seal

Here is the finished model with all of the options.

And a close up.

Pilot

I started by spraying the pilot with Rustoleum Camo Khaki spray, then basecoated the controls Chaos Black, the helmet VMC American Dark Green, and the visor Ultramarine Blue. The skin was basecoated with Elf Flesh. Then, the entire figure was given a Raw Umber wash. A little bit of Bleached Bone to highlight the uniform and skin tones, and that was about it.

Post Mortem

This was a fun little model. It goes together very easily and can be modelled in a huge number of ways.
