Dad, can you push me a little closer?

1 Month and 3 days old, 3/8

Overall baby baseline has increased by 60 oz (32%) over the past month, driven primarily by a 1.75-2.00 oz/day weight gain by both Matthew and Benjamin over the past 14 days.

Enough with the pictures - we want to sleep

End of Week 1, 2/11

The babies are officially one week old today. What a ride. After 4 days in the hospital (a big shoutout to the nurses and doctors at Marin General Hospital who provided an amazing quality of care), we were finally able to bring the babies home - upon which, we had discovered that we had forgotten approximately (so it seemed) 90% of whatever we needed.

Susana is still recovering from the c-section, which means no pushing, no heavy lifting, and no stretching - also limited time on her feet. This, in turn, means that I am getting lots of experience changing diapers - woo hoo.

More trivia:

  • Matthew - born 10:24 2/5/03. His full name is Matthew Zi Fong Kan
  • Benjamin - born 10:31 2/5/03. His full name is Benjamin Zi Wei Kan
  • Books read during my 4 days at the hospital - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azbakan, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  • Last place visited prior to going into the hospital - Peet's Coffee for an extra large drip coffee, a bear claw, and a small cup of milk
  • First place visited after leaving the hospital - Jamba Juice for a Mango Madness and a Chocolate Moo'd
  • Most people visiting us in the hospital at any given moment - 10
  • First day of stinky poops - Day 7

Two quick comments on circumcision: a) God bless anesthesia and b) better at day 4 than at year 10+. This seems like an extreme way to "come-of-age"

Pretty wiped out after a long day

Matthew blocks out the sound of his brother's crying

Susana and the kids - asleep, finally

Home at last - their new crib

Day 2, 2/6

Got to change my first diaper today - it's like watching meat coming out of a sausage machine - it just keeps on coming and coming and coming ... then, he peed on himself. Woo hoo.

  • I am happy to announce that the Kan family has hit our 2003 Growth Targets ahead of schedule
  • At least for now, it does not look like there is a Parenting 4 Dummies web site complete with screenshots and tweaking guides in my future
  • We'll take the babies around on a roadshow in a couple of days after everyone is back home and Susana is up to walking around
  • Right now we are still learning to tell them apart (chins, earlobes, noses, etc) - I hope their hats don't come off at the same time. If we find that they look too much alike, we'll go with Plan B - black magic marker and a "M" or a "B" on the bottoms of their feet

Day 1, 2/5

Below are a couple of pics of Susana (and me), Matthew (5 lb, 10 oz, 19") and Benjamin (6 lb, 0.5 oz, 19") on their first day. A couple of comments:

  • For my Silver Oak friends, I have to dispel the impression that I named one after Matt Dilligan. However, do note the trendy caps that both are wearing
  • For my on-line friends, you can also think of them as ^WJ|Matthew and ^WJ|Benjamin
  • For my BAASH friends - In a couple of years, me and the kids will make up a fireteam
  • For everyone else - stop by and see them any time
To answer a few questions:
  • Matthew was first and is therefore the "big brother", by about 2-3 minutes
  • They are fraternal twins
  • Yes, we knew we were having twins
  • Babies were delivered via C-section
  • We did consider the name "Rahul", but it fell to 3rd place after Matthew and Benjamin

The proud father .... at this point, the babies are about 30 minutes old

... the proud mother ...

... and the babies. Uncle Pouncer would be proud

So cute together
