Urban Terror Beta 2 FAQ

General Disclaimer: This FAQ only focuses on Urban Terror Beta 2+. I've also stayed away from system related (e.g., hardware and software) issues. The information in this FAQ has been shamelessly pirated from solutions offered up on the Urban Terror Forums, so a lot of the credit goes to the posters there even if they are not directly credited by me. Where should I get started?

Read through the Urban Terror Beta 2 manual. It is very well written and should answer most of your basic questions

What files do I need to get going?

First, you should probably be running the 1.29f patch for Quake 3. Next, go to Urbanterror.net and download the Urban Terror Beta 2 release as well as the 2.1 or 2.2 patch. Which patch you need really depends on whether or not you have already patched up once. After you've installed these files, you should have everything you need to play.

Stay tuned to Urbanterror.net for a soon-to-come map pack with some cool new maps from Silicon Ice.

My UT games runs a lot slower than my Quake game?

Not everyone experiences this, I did. Urban Terror is built off the Quake 3: Team Arena engine which, while offering some great new stuff, consumes more resources than Quake 3. Play with multiple bots in particular eat up a lot of processing/graphics power as do the new radio commands. I've found that by tuning my resolution down a notch or two and reducing my depth and texture bits from 32 to 16, my games runs a lot smoother. I'm sure there are lots of other tweaks -- visit Gamepower.org for a full listing of graphics and systems tweaks you can perform to get your Urban Terror game running in tip-top shape.

I don't see anything here about setting up basic game?

This FAQ really focuses on setting up and tweaking your Urban Terror game. Of course, there will be lots of questions that come up regarding the basic game, Quake 3: Arena, upon which Urban Terror is built. If you have questions about the basic game (e.g., creating an autoexec, setting your name, downloading maps, etc), why don't your visit the Newbie FAQ. You should find an answer there.

Is there another config that I can see as an example?

If you want a copy of my Q3UT2 config, you can get it right here (terror.txt). I make no claims that this is the best configuration out there, it's simply what works for me.

I get the error message 'Server wants Protocol XX'. What do I do?

Only Quake 3:Arena generates protocol errors. Protocol errors mean that the server is running a different version of Quake 3:Arena from your machine. You can only play on machines running the same version as you. Check the following protocol number to figure out which version the server is running:

    Error MessageVersion on Server
    Protocol 66Version 1.29f-h
    Protocol 48Version 1.27g or h
Protocol 46Version 1.25 - evil beta, stay away
    Protocol 45Version 1.17
    Protocol 43Version 1.16n and earlier

What are the key actions I need to bind?

Here are some key actions for which you will want to make sure you have key assignments:

    +button2 //turn item on/off
+button3 // Change firemode single, burst, and full auto
    +button5 // Reload weapon
    +button6 // Bandage
    +button7 // Opens doors
    +button8 // sprint

What are the weapons assignments?

Here are the numerical assignments for each weapon in case you want to bind keys to specific weapons:

    weapon 1 - Knife
    weapon 2 - Beretta
    weapon 3 - Desert Eagle
    weapon 4 - UMP 45
    weapon 5 - SPAS 12
    weapon 6 - MP5K
    weapon 7 - HK 69
    weapon 8 - M4
    weapon 9 - G35
    weapon 10 - PSG-1
    weapon 11 - Flash grenade
    weapon 12 - HE grenade
    weapon 13 - SR-8

You can also use two toggles included in the game by SID:

    ut_weaptoggle primary secondary
    ut_weaptoggle primary sidearm

Just bind them to a key and you're all set.

I've also copied my weapons layout here. I'm not claiming it's the best, it's just what works for me. The W and R keys basically control access to all the weapons I might start with. If I pick up other weapon, it will also be controlled from W or R.

    bind r "ut_weaptoggle primary secondary"

Notice that you can set up a toggle between your primary and secondary weapons as well as primary weapon and sidearm. The next set of binds toggle within a specific type of weapon. Sometimes you will pick up another weapons that is classified as a primary, meaning that you are now running around with 2 primary weapons. In this case, the primary-secondary toggle has problems. This is my fix.

    bind w "vstr weapongroup1" // Grenade, Pistol
    bind 1 "weapon 1"
    bind 2 "weapon 5; weapon 6; weapon 4" // (Shotgun, MP5K, UMP45)
    bind 3 "weapon 8; weapon 9" // Assault Rifle (M4/G36)
    bind 4 "weapon 7; weapon 11; weapon 12" // Grenades (HK69, HE, Flash)
    bind 5 "weapon 10; weapon 13" // Sniper Rifle (PSG1, SR-1)

    // Multiple-Weaponbind Script sidearm-grenade
set side "weapon 11; weapon 12; weapon 2; weapon 3; set weapongroup1 vstr gren"
set gren "weapon 2; weapon 3; weapon 11; weapon 12; set weapongroup1 vstr side"
    set weapongroup1 "vstr gren"

Can I pre-configure weapon and equipment combos?

If you really want, you can pre-define several weapon/gear combinations. These can then be bound to keys so that you can easily switch from a close combat-assault rig to a sniper rig depending on the map or situation. Credit goes to one of the SID team members who posted all of the details and a UT forumer who pointed me in the right direction.

The command you want to use in your UT Autoexec is:

    bind x "set gear 1234567"

You can find this line in the q3config.cfg file in your Q3UT2 folder. I typically run around with a G36, MP5K, NVG, Desert Eagle, and Kevlar so my code line looks like:

seta gear "GMIAQRA"

1-7 are alpha codes that designate each piece of equipment you carry. The order is:

  1. sidearm
  2. primary
  3. secondary
  4. grenade
  5. item 1
  6. item 2
  7. item 3

Make sure you select an valid configuration otherwise I believe you will end up with the default. You are allowed to fill 5 equipment slots: primary weapon, secondary weapon, pistol, and two equipment slots. Each weapon you give up (max of 2), enables you to carry an additional piece of gear.

The codes for each piece of gear are:

    A - None Selected
    E - Knife
    F - Beretta
    G - Desert Eagle
    H - Spas 12
    I - MP5K
    J - UMP45
    K - HK69
    L - M4
    M - G36
    N - PSG1
    O - HE grenade
    P - Flash Grenade
    Q - Kevlar Vest
    R - NVG
    S - Medkit
    T - Silencer
    U - Laser
    V - Helmet
    W - Extra ammo
    Y - SR8

By binding a couple of gear combos to different keys, you can easily switch to different configurations based on map or how you happen to feel at the momemt. It also saves you the hassle of screwing around with the equipment menu.

Here are a couple of example binds:

bind 7 "set gear GMIAQRA" //G36, MP5K, NVG, Kevlar, Desert Eagle
bind 8 "set gear GMJAQRA" //PSG-1, MP5K, Kevlar, NVG, DE
bind 9 "set gear GLAOQVA //M4, DE, Kevlar & Helmet, HE Gren

How do I change the colors of my crosshairs?

The lines you want ot add to your autoexec files are:

    seta cg_drawcrosshair "6" seta cg_crosshairRGB "0 0 0 0" //sets crosshair color
    seta cg_crosshairFriendRGB "0 0 0 0" //sets crosshair color when over a friend
    seta cg_scopeRGB "0 01 1" //sets crosshair color as viewed thru a scope
    seta cg_scopeFriendRGB "1 0 0 1" //sets crosshair color as viewed thru a scope when over a friend

A few color codes you might want to use are:

red - "1 0 0 1"
Green - "0 1 0 1"
Blue - "0 0 1 1"
White - "0 0 0 0"
Black - "1 1 1 1"

How do I bind a key to change between always run and always walk?

Add the following line to your autoexec:

    bind x "toggle cl_run"

Why doesn't the echo command work in Q3UT2?

Read the manual for the 2.1 patch. The ECHO command is replaced with the UT_ECHO command.

Can someone help me bind a key to crouch and stay crouched?

    set crouch "vstr stand"
set sit "+movedown; set crouch vstr stand"
set stand "-movedown; set crouch vstr sit"
    bind x "vstr crouch"

What are the different gametypes people play in UT Beta2?

Follow the leader

If your the leader (as the 50 point font lettering tells you that you are, pay attention!) your aim is for your team to facilitate you getting to the enemy flag (use your flag rader to find it). You can win by killing all the enemy team (HARD WAY) or by you (the leader) getting to the enemy flag (EASY WAY). If your not the leader. Defending your flag is good too.

Capture and Hold

Use the flag radar to locate and capture the flags located around the map. The more flags you have at the minute mark the more points your team gains (try to grab flags as close to the minute mark as possible, time your captures!)

Team Survivor

This is what the big boys play. Play as a team and kill all the enemy before they do the same to your team. Remember winning the round is more important then personal frags! (the frags are a bonus ;)) If you die you sit out the round.

Team Deathmatch

Kill everybody that is A) shooting at you B) Does not have the same colour arm/leg bands. (A is subject to B). All personal frags are added to your teams total. Lovely and fun and good to get your aim in.

Capture the Flag

Work as a team and get in to the enemy area and teef there flag. Once you have the enemy flag bring it back to your own flag point. (If your flag isnt where it is supposed to be then you cant cap until its returned)

How to I tell my teammates from the enemy?

The best way is to develop a sense of situation awareness which enables you to keep track of your mates. However, there are three ways the game tells you who is who:
  1. Look for a red or blue leg band on your target
  2. Set your crosshair colors to show one color from teammates and another for enemy
  3. If you use a scoped weapon, use can now change the color of the crosshairs inside the scope in the same way

Are third party maps available for Urban Terror?

Yes there are. Urban Terroistz and Madmapper have small collection of maps. To install a map, just download and then unzip into your /q3ut2 folder. If you don't see the map in the map menu, you can manually start it by dropping your console and typing in:

    map [mapname]
Where [mapname] is the name of your map without the extension
